Marion Region Healthcare System Celebrates National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week

The 2009 National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week celebration will take place this week, April 19-25th.  The theme for 2009 is “Laboratory Professionals Get Results!” and the week was created to celebrate these professionals and their vital role in promoting and protecting your health.

Little known to most patients, the clinical laboratory professional is a key member of today’s health care team. Possessing the skills to unlock important medical information that is pivotal to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

Every day, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare workers depend on laboratory professionals to perform tests on blood and other body fluids, interpret the results, and help provide a complete picture of a patient’s health. Using modern equipment and advanced technology, laboratorians can detect the presence of cancer, identify infectious viruses and bacteria, and measure glucose, cholesterol, or drug levels in blood. Without this precise and valuable information, medicine would simply become guesswork.

Laboratory professionals often work in hospitals, physician offices, or private clinical laboratories. Others are employed by university or industrial research laboratories to seek solutions for medicine’s many unanswered questions. And these professionals are increasingly found outside the traditional laboratory, participating in community health activities, conducting environmental testing, or serving in the Peace Corps.

Whatever the setting -- behind the scenes or out in your community -- laboratory professionals are by your side, working as key members of your health care team. Here at Marion County Medical Center, we have a team of twenty-four dedicated clinical laboratory professionals who perform thousands of laboratory tests to assist your doctor in caring for you and maintaining your quality health status.  These professionals are Medical Technologists (MT), Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT), and phlebotomists, as well as a group of pathology directors who provide oversight for the lab and consult services for physicians.

Join Marion Regional Healthcare System as we salute our Medical Laboratory Professionals for the quality services they provide for your laboratory needs.
