Stackhouse Named Volunteer of the Year
Marion, SC--The James R. Clark Memorial Sickle Cell Foundation has named Roosevelt Stackhouse, RN, Director of Nursing Operations at Marion Regional Healthcare System, Volunteer of the Year.
Roosevelt was honored for his work in helping to establishing the Marion County support group for sickle cell patients and families. “Having friends with sickle cell touched home with me. I was originally approached to help the Florence support group establish a chapter in Marion County. I currently serve as a mentor for the Marion support group,” explained Stackhouse.
The Marion County James R. Clark Memorial Sickle Cell Foundation Support Chapter was established in early 2008 when Marion Regional Healthcare System recognized the need for a local group due to the growing number of patients who were unable to travel to Florence. The group was formed to meet the needs of the citizens of Marion and surrounding counties with sickle cell disease, those with the sickle cell traits and family members and friends of sickle cell patients.
“I was given a list of patients needing support from this area. This served as the beginning of our group,” continued Stackhouse. “About one out of every ten African-Americans in South Carolina has the trait for sickle cell making the need for such an organization so important.”
The Marion County support group meets the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. in classroom A/B at Marion County Medical Center. The group offers free educational information on testing, diagnoses and care, and provides counseling and service information to those already diagnosed with sickle cell.
